The SWS Roller Derby

We are very proud sponsors of the South West Sydney Rockets Roller Derby Girls. We have donated a tonne of items for them to Auction in order to raise much needed funds for their season. Here is a little more about them.

We are an all-female, DIY, skater-owned and -operated flat track roller derby league who love nothing more than putting our skates on and getting out on the track!

South West Sydney Rockets was formed by a small group of women passionate about roller-skating and the community in April 2010, with only a handful of members skating with us in April, our league has grown strong; with over 35 girls actively skating, we are showing the Derby world that South West Sydney Rockets are a force to be reckoned with !!

We would formally like to introduce to you our School of Rock tartan dress. Based on the same design as our Pretty in Punk skully dress - that has been a huge success, we know you will also love this girls dress. I am a huge fan of tartan/plaid and it never seems to go out of style. The cotton tartan used was imported from the states and is similar to a Stewart tartan. We used our organic soft cotton tees with puff sleeves for that girly touch and added our love heart applique. Meeting the Minister for Women

What a pleasure it was to meet The Honourable Karen Struthers -The Minister for Women at the Connect 2 Mums, Mumpreneur awards held in Brisbane August 2010. Karen presented me with my Finalist Certificate and happily posed for a picture. She gave a short speech, and being a mum herself, totally understood where we were all coming from. I really liked her honesty and down to earth attitude.

Anna Bligh could not make the awards but sent us a inspirational video message.

Lunalei did not win the Best Boutique Award - but by just being a Finalist was an honour.

Can you imagine my excitement when I found out that Lunalei was a finalist in the Mumpreneur awards as the Best Boutique Store. This is the 2nd year that the awards have been running at Connect2mums.

They honour all the Mums and Dads excelling in their business's.

Last year we Won the judges choice for Coolest product.

Winners will be announced on July 31st at the awards ceremony in Brisbane. I will be attending and am looking forward to this event.

There is some pretty tough competition as we are up against some other amazing finalists in this category.

Fingers crossed that Lunalei wins.

My 2009 C2M Seminar Experience

I wanted to write about my experience at the connect2mums 09 Seminar , not just for myself to reflect on, but for any of those that were not able to attend or are new members between now and the next seminar, and are thinking of coming.

I arrived from Sydney on the Gold Coast at 10.30am Friday Morning. I had previously connected on site with 2 other Mums who were coming in early, and we had arranged to meet up at the hotel, then head off to lunch, we had no idea what each other looked like, but found each other easily (the beauty of the mobile phone).

The ladies I met were Jayne - Swish Lily, a beautiful sophisticated lady and the enchanting hypnotic Tarryn - Transformed. We found a little cafe and had a great $10 lunch and talked and talked, sharing stories and getting to know each other.
I was delighted to know that I was not the only one who had a partner that is always lamenting "You spend too much time on the computer" - as I explained to the girls, I have told my hubby over and over again that running an online store requires the use of a computer, and when they figure out a way to use the internet without one, he would be the first to know LOL.

After lunch we headed back to the hotel, I was checking in, and there I met the gorgeous Monique - Your Cheeky Monkey, one of my room mates for the weekend, and a leader here at C2M.
We headed up to our luxurious room and there I flopped preparing myself for the following day, whilst Monique attended to a million and one things that she had to do.
Once settled I tracked down Jayne again (in a lingerie store) as she was shopping with the vivacious Maree - Noteable designs. We walked around purchasing supplies for our rooms. (The location of the hotel was brilliant).

With our accomodation we were entitled to a free drink - so a group of us met up in the bar for a drink. So there I got to meet even more C2M mums.

Back to my room to prepare for the Book Launch that evening, and there I met my 2nd room mate Sally - Strawberry Jam Designs - who must of been a sister in another life. We dressed ourselves up which was so much fun, I have never had sisters that lived with me so I enjoyed being with Monique and Sally and sharing this girly moment.
Off we headed to "Howl at the Moon" an awesome place (more on that later). Here we met Katy and Peace two women who I admire so much and the Authors of "What I wish I knew before I became a Mother".
A few glasses of wine, the meeting of more new friends, and some yummy nibblies later it was time to head back to the hotel for an early night.....or so I thought.
Sally and I decided to stay for another drink....well this amazing band came on - consisting of 2 grand piano's and a host of singers. Once that music started we found ourselves on the dance floor riveted to the entertainment. I truly had forgotten what it was like to go out and have some fun.
An hour or so later and after some deep conversations out in the smoking area, Sally and I skipped back to our rooms trying not to wake our little sister Monique, me giggling (I felt so alive) did not help.

Next day we were up at 5.00am to get ourselves showered etc before heading down to breakfast (the best buffet brekky I have ever seen) and then to set up our displays. I was feeling a little unwell with a sore throat, too much howling at the moon, but I was energised about the day.

Our Seminar commenced with Leonie Featherstones Introduction of our beautiful leader Paula, and with that we were all ready for our shot of VITAMIN K. (Kuhnemann)
Paula welcomed us all and shared some of her story with us, the obstacles in her life that she has overcome...to be continued.....

Next was Peace & Katy leading us with some speed networking. A bit like speed dating but we were talking about our business and exchanging cards. Now for those of you that have never verbalised what you actually do or sell this was very educational and made me think about how I can describe my business to the best of my ability.

Next was Paula's motivational speech of "Belief in Self" - boy did I need to hear this.
She discussed surrounding ourselves with positive people, moving the negative aside.
Finding the WHY - Why are you running a business what are your goals?
Setting small goals then taking action. Overcoming all obstacles and finally LIVING YOUR DREAM.
We all gave Paula a piece of paper with our goal and date that we would achieve this goal...she is going to follow all of us up.

Nicole - Our occupational therapist took us through some stretches, great ones to remember when you sit at the computer for long periods of time.

Then Kelly - Vital Earth traditions - spoke to us - WOW the calming energy of this divine woman was so...calming
She shared various routines that she has with her family - Giving gratitude - and in her workshop we all got to massage each others hands with some divine products.
I want to share with you this from my notes:
You are only responsible for 50%
As Women and Mothers we want to fix most everything, feel responsible when someone doesnt like what has transpired, and feel guilty when people didnt get what they wanted and feel even guiltier if we are being blamed for their upset.
You are responsible for 50% in all relationships.......
Of course this doesnt apply to small children but it does to adults!
In any relationship between two people you are responsible for how you react to a situation, how you handle yourself in your situations. You are responsible for how you talk to and treat other human beings. If you are standing in your own truth, have handled your situations with ethic and kindness then you have acted in good faith.
I am not responsible nor are you responsible for someone else's reaction to any situation.
Release yourself of that burden and responsibility because its not your burden to fix!

And between these speakers Paula showered us with chocolate and prizes galore were given away, not to mention all the gifts that kept appearing thoughout the day from various sponsors.

(now I am sorry if this is out of some order there was so much going on) we then heard from Gayle - Mummies Wish ( a deserving charity) and an amazing woman who reminded me yet again that all obstacles can be overcome.

We broke for morning tea (fantastic coffee and cakes galore). Those of us that had display tables headed to the same room to show off our wares.

Heading back in we listened to Jen Harris about all the financial side to business.
Deciding what legal entity you will trade in
Applying for your ABN and TFN
Decide if you will register as and employer when you apply for the ABN
GST
Register your Business name
Licences permits and rules and regulations that apply to your business
Insurance - This was a real awakening for me
Record keeping
Seperate CC for business
Computer accounting
Learning what the important numbers are in your business
Avoiding some classic mistakes in business
Where to get help.
I would say alot of learnt from Jen, she knew her stuff and we were able to ask her loads of questions.

Next we heard about Networking and your Biz from Leonie - Phoenix Trading - What a dynamite of a woman!
Discussed was our Intention with business relations, learning to listen actively ( you never know who you are talking to and how it can help your business)
Ask questions - work thru and not to - who do you know? - What problem can my product solve-
The features and benefits - invoking emotion in your customer - using descriptive words in copy. Practising using those words - Make the most of each connection - take the time.
GIVERS - GET

Next to address us was the beautiful stylish softly spoken Tania Usher - She shared with us her story and gave us some wonderful incite.
She spoke of the Magnet effect - we attract exactly what we want
The butterfly effect - small ripples will and do have an effect on our lives and those around us.
The Mozart effect - how music can increase our intelligence and awareness.
Once again thru all the obstacles in her life she has overcome them to be an incredibly successful woman in business.

We broke for a much needed lunch - divine food ! I had a stall so was working that - and I made a few sales which was excellent!!

Heading back in for the afternoon we proceeded with the "Break out Groups. These consisted of:
1. WAHM Achieving Work/Balance with Kelly Lynch Ring - Vital earth traditions
2. Mums launch into blogging with Catherine Oehlamn - Squigglemum
3. Using Social Media - ie: Facebook/Twitter - to promote your biz - Johanna Baker
4. How to publish your book - Peace and Katy
5. Seducing the Media - Tania Usher

All of these were incredible !! I learnt so much but if I was to write it all I would be here for eons.
Sandy from Pure Earth Noosa spoke about her presence at the markets and putting her face in front of her biz.

Paula then presented us with an incredible offer of a BIZ CLUB - I will be putting my biz in this.

Afternoon tea was now upon us with more delicious treats and a few more sales at my display table YAYYY.

More prizes were drawn and I spoke briefly on SEO - Which as I promised those that spoke to me I will start a group to help you all with the techy side of your biz. It was at this point that I realised that I am an expert (something that Tania encouraged us all to look at).

Becky Holbrook of fortun8gal presented us with her story - What an amazing woman - her story was full of love, heart break, displacement, courage, determination and SUCCESS. Apparently Becky was a first time speaker - well you would never of known it - she injected humour, sensibility and emotion that all left us laughing and crying...I will never forget your story Becky your strength and courage is to be admired.

We met all our leaders and had the opportunity to ask them questions.
What a bunch of great women - I love you all!!

Then Paula concluded the day with a speech that knocked my socks off.
The adversities that Paula has overcome and continues to overcome is an inspiration to me. The love of her son and BFF. Then she left us with a poem "The Race" - Google for a copy.
Yes ladies we can all do it. With the love and support of each other we will achieve.

My Mantra that I had forgotten and will now be said everyday is.

DREAM - BELIEVE - ACHIEVE - YES YOU CAN DO IT.

I will save the evening for another time - but "OH WHAT A NIGHT" it was a great night - I found myself - I believed in myself - and I shook off all that negative energy.

If you are thinking about going to the next seminar - DO IT - You wont have any regrets.

Houndstooth is back

So the houndstooth print is back in fashion. A true classic print worn by the likes of Jackie O and Kate Spade. Love it or hate it the houndstooth has been an iconic style that will never date. Houndstooth checks originated in woven wool cloth of the Scottish Lowlands, but is now used in many other materials.
The traditional houndstooth check is made with alternating bands of four dark and four light threads.
Scottish in origin [also called guncheck, dogtooth, or four-and-four check], this fabric is so named because its pattern is reminiscent of the jagged back teeth of a hound. The familiar print, which debuted on clothing in the 1930s
At Lunalei we have 3 different styles of houndstooth pants, all made from quality soft french terry cotton. The full houndstooth print, the cuffed houndstooth print pant, and the tuxedo lounge pant with a touch of houndstooth print.

Glen Plaid (short for Glen Urquhart plaid) is a textile pattern that is similar to houndstooth, with alternating blocks of 2-on-2 and 4-on-4 colouring. Glen plaid is also known as the Prince of Wales check, which has an over-check in a bright or contrasting color. The pattern was made populat by Edward VIII when he was the Prince of Wales. The pattern made a frequent appearance on fabrics designed in the 1930s through to the 1970s.

The Australian department store David Jones uses a houndstooth pattern as part of its corporate logo. The branding — a black-on-white houndstooth pattern — is one of the most recognised corporate identities in Australia. A government sponsored panel judged it in 2006 as one of Australia's top ten favourite trade marks. The origin of this motif owes itself to the insistence of its founder on not using the store's name on its packaging. His aim was that the store would be so well known that everyone should recognise it simply by this now-famous motif.

Now, who says geometry can't be fun? Be fashion forward this winter by wearing 2010's hottest geometric pattern. Everyone will do a double take and ask you 'Wow! Where did you get that?
